Dear Catherine,
Happy New Year!
2007 is getting off to a great start. I'm really excited for all the new developments at Premium Birth Services. Starting in February all my massage appointments will be there! I've already starting teaching infant massage classes and christened my art studio with work on 3 different bellycasts. I can't wait to see how things continue to unfold at the new place.
Looking forward to sharing a great 2007 with you,
Catherine
5 Ways Prenatal Yoga Can Make Pregnancy and Birth Easier |
|
By Liza Janda, RYT, AAHCC, Bradley Method Instructor
Many women, including those who have never done yoga before, find that it is an ideal form of exercise during their pregnancies and beyond. In our fast paced world, it is so important to slow down and take time for ourselves. Some people just don't think about what hard work it is growing a little person! The benefits of Prenatal Yoga are backed up not just by testimonials, but also, by research.
Here are 5 reasons to practice yoga during your pregnancy.
1. Relief from Back Pain
All that extra growing weight pulls the belly and spine forward. In addition to poses that stretch and strengthen the whole body, we do poses that strengthen the back and the stomach and help moms cope with that "forward pull".
2. Relaxation and Stress Relief
Moms-to-be will tell you they love the feeling they get after a yoga session. They feel alert, vibrant, relaxed, energized, and glow with a sense of balance and vitality.
3. Increase or Maintain Stamina For Labor
Research evaluating the effects of yoga on stamina has proved that practicing yoga can increase stamina. Labor and birth are literally an athletic event. Yoga prepares mothers for some of the hardest work they'll ever do. The combination of breath-control exercises and mindful stretching and standing poses makes for a strong and confident mother-to-be.
4. Reduce Fear of Labor
In the United States, most women are fearful of labor. In addition to releasing muscle tension, we are practicing how to break out of the "fight or flight" cycle all too common in women's labor experiences today. Deep breathing, stretching, getting in different poses, and talking about how normal labor is, helps them avoid the cycle of fear and pain.
5. Healthier Babies and Mothers
The practice of yoga during pregnancy seems to improve birth weight and reduce prematurity and overall complications. Possible mechanisms whereby yoga improves pregnancy outcomes include increased blood flow to the placenta, decreased transfer of maternal stress hormones, and decreased premature release of hormones that trigger the onset of labor.
